When life gives you a second chance, what you do with it can change the lives of others.
There are people who talk about making a difference and then there are people who dedicate their lives to actually doing it.
Steve and Claire Holmes are two such people.
Their story is one of heartbreak and resilience, determination and a commitment to helping others that are facing one of life's most frightening diagnoses - cancer.
Through their work with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Australia, Steve and Claire are working to improve the way patients and their families navigate cancer, ensuring that people have access to information, guidance, support and a better understanding of the options available to them.
Their work is deeply personal. They understand what it means to be on the other side of a diagnosis because they have lived it themselves.
Steve was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare aggressive cancer of the bile ducts. Even more heartbreaking his brother had lost his life to the same form of cancer.
Steve's experience opened his eyes to the importance of understanding his diagnosis and knowing what treatment options were available to him. Claire played an important part navigating all of the complicated medical information as well as being caregiver. Along the way they recognised something important, patients need more than a diagnosis and a treatment plan. They need information, support and the confidence to ask questions.
In 2018 Steve and Claire co-founded the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Australia, their mission was clear - to help patients and caregivers become better informed, better supported and better equipped.
In May 2024 the foundation became a registered Australian charity, the continuation of a promise to turn painful experiences into something that can help others.
As a Mum watching my own daughter navigating terminal cancer, I am aware how quickly life can change.
For families like ours, cancer research isn't just about statistics or funding - it's about the people we love and the precious hope that better treatments and outcomes may one day be possible for others.
There is also a personal connection that makes Steve and Claire's work more meaningful to me, like them I am a Kiwi living in Australia and we all grew up in the same New Zealand town. It's such small world and I'm incredibly blessed to see people from our own hometown making such. difference in the lives of others.
I have enormous respect for Steve and Claire their efforts deserve our recognition, respect and support.
