One of my morning routines is tongue scraping, and honestly, it's one of those little things that makes you wonder why you didn't start doing it sooner.
We all brush and floss our teeth, but our tongue can often get forgotten about. During the night bacteria can build up on the tongue and scraping is a really easy way of removing it and giving your mouth that clean fresh feeling.
It only takes a few seconds and I like to do it first thing before drinking my morning coffee, eating breakfast and brushing my teeth. It's a small step in my overall self care routine that makes me feel better.
There are a multitude of different scrapers on the market, I prefer to use copper. Copper is naturally antimicrobial, it's also durable, reusable and easy to look after. Just rinse thoroughly after use, dry it well.
In Ayurveda tongue scraping has been practised for many centuries as part of the morning cleansing ritual, known as dinacharya. From an Ayurvedic perspective the tongue is considered a reflection of what is happening inside the body. Changes in the tongues coating, colour or appearance have been traditionally been observed as part of Ayurvedic health practices.
Modern dentistry looks at scraping a little differently, while we know it can help remove bacteria from the surface, claims about detoxing the body aren't corroborated by scientific evidence.
That's what makes these little rituals so interesting, you can appreciate the wisdom and tradition while still keeping a grounded approach to wellness.
