To Blade or Not to Blade ...

To Blade or Not to Blade ...

If you've ever looked in the mirror and wondered if the peach fuzz (vellus hair) you see on your face is normal - it's completely normal. Everyone has it, it's usually soft and fine and light in colour that you only notice it when light catches it.

While this doesn't bother some people, it does others and there is an easy non invasive option to remove it - Dermaplaning.

One of the biggest myths I often hear is "it makes your hair grow back thicker and stronger" - it does not.

The hair grows back exactly the same as it was before, because its been cut straight it can sometimes feel a little different as it first grows through.

The pro's of dermaplaning are smoother skin, brighter complexion, makeup sits on your skin better, can enhance the penetration of skincare products and may improve the appearance of mild acne scarring and dry, flaky skin.

For this procedure a therapist holds the skin taut and glides a sterile blade across the surface of your skin. This usually takes around 20-45 minutes and is generally pain free with a light scraping sensation.

With so many DIY tools online  it can be tempting to try this yourself and while they look like the tools professionals use, they are not and the technique isn't either.

A qualified therapist understands skin and will assess your skin type to check for active acne, rosacea, eczema or irritation to make sure this is the best treatment for your skin. The angle of the blade and the pressure applied all make a difference to the end result. When performed incorrectly it can leave you with cuts, irritation, infection and over exfoliation.

Usual side effects include mild sensitivity, slight redness and temporary dryness. This usually resolves itself within a day or two, wear sunscreen SPF30 daily and avoid harsh exfoliants for the following few days after.

At the end of the day your skin is an investment and it deserves expert care, while DIY treatments may seem convenient nothing replaces the knowledge and technique of a qualified therapist.

Beautiful skin starts with the right advice.
