I'm calling bullsh*t on this one, fake beauty hacks are everywhere and they are ruining skincare - we've all seen them.
TikTok, Facebook, Instagram videos promising glass skin overnight, the DIY botox alternatives, the miracle products promising to erase wrinkles in 30 seconds.
Millions of views, thousands of comments. Very little science.
As someone who has spent years in the beauty industry, I honestly find it heartbreaking to watch. Beauty used to be about education, self care, and helping people feel confident in their own skin. Somewhere along the way it became about chasing clicks.
Today, anyone with a ring light can become a "skincare expert".
One day we're being told beef tallow is the answer, the next day we're putting lemon juice on our skin or mixing random ingredients from our kitchen.
The problem isn't that people are experimenting, the problem is these trends are spreading faster than the truth.
Many of these hacks are created because they have entertainment value, not because they are effective.
Skin is not a science experiment and healthy skin doesn't come from the latest viral trend, it comes from consistency.
Cleansing your skin properly, sun protection, staying hydrated and using ingredients that have been researched. There is no miracle ingredient, if there were every dermatologist in the world would already be using it.
The beauty industry has become spectacularly good at creating urgency, people are buying products because they are scared they'll miss out not because they actually need them. Your skin is not supposed to look filtered, it has texture and pores. Real skin changes with age, that's normal.
Just as worrying are the obsessions with ten step skincare routines.
Layer after layer of retinol, exfoliants, masks, serums, peptides and oils.
Over treating skin is one of the leading causes of irritation, redness and damaged skin barriers that I see. Simple is often the winner.
The saddest part of all is how many people feel the need to "fix" themselves, every wrinkle is treated like a problem and something to hide. We've lost sight of what real beauty is, it is about enhancing who you are and wanting to look after yourself, not trying to convince people you are ageless.
Do yourself a favour and ignore the hype, ask yourself is there any real evidence this works, is it safe for my skin and what is the real reason I am buying this.
The beauty industry doesn't need more hacks, it needs transparency, education and honesty.
