The Not So Wellness Side of Building a Wellness Business

The Not So Wellness Side of Building a Wellness Business

When you decide to build a wellness business you probably imagine all the fun stuff that goes on behind the scenes.

Pretty products, beautiful branding, taking photos, writing about things you genuinely love and creating a website that feels like you.

What you don't see is the amount of work, stress, second guessing and to be quite frank weirdness that comes with putting yourself and your business online.

It's hard!

And I'm not talking about just the building of the website.

I'm talking about trying to understand SEO, Google, keywords, product descriptions, algorithms, social media, analytics, meta and about 500 other things never knew existed until you decided to start a business.

You can spend hours changing one tiny thing on your website because apparently google needs convincing that your website actually exists.

And then there is the social media side of things and this is where it really gets interesting, because putting a business online also means putting yourself in front of complete strangers.

Some complete strangers have a LOT of opinions.

You can post something you believe is completely harmless and someone you've never met, who knows absolutely nothing about you, your business or your intentions can take offence.

I've actually sat there on a couple occasions and thought ... "hang on, are you alright???"

The internet is a strange place!

You can have someone genuinely interested in what you're doing, asking questions and supporting your business, and then five minutes later someone telling you what you're doing wrong.

And here is the thing.

I'm not claiming to have all the answers.

I'm building this business because I believe in making wellness and beauty feel simple, accessible and enjoyable. I'm learning as I go just like everyone else.

I'm also human, sometimes I get things wrong, sometimes I change my mind, sometimes I try something that doesn't work.

There has been times I have spent three hours trying to fix something on my website only to discover I was looking in the wrong place. Sometimes I wonder whether I'm completely mad  for doing this in the first place.

Then I remember why I did it, I wanted to create something that felt authentic to me. Something that wasn't about pretending to have perfect skin and all the answers, that would grow into a community where women could talk about wellness, getting older, how to feel good, trying new things and being bloody real about it.

The backlash from strangers at this point can be a little amusing, they don't see the hours behind the screen or see the learning curves. Starting a business takes guts and starting one online takes another level of patience.

Building a wellness business while trying to navigate social media, well that's a whole other form of therapy!

I'll listen to constructive criticism, learn from people who know more than me and happily admit when I've gotten something wrong. But random nastiness from people who have no idea who I am - I'm learning to leave that where it belongs.

If you've ever started something new and felt like everyone suddenly became an expert on what you're doing, you are not alone.

Your business doesn't have to be perfect, and you don't have to be everyone's cup of tea. You just have to keep showing up and maybe have a wine or two afterwards.
