I'm a firm believer in an uncomplicated routine, you don't need 27 different products and a bathroom cupboard that looks like you've bought out a pharmacy. For me, it's the simple things I actually stick to that make a difference.
There's six core things I always come back to, not because I think they're quick fixes but because I genuinely enjoy them, they give me great long term results and they don't take long to incorporate into your day.
Castor oil has been used traditionally in wellness practices for centuries, and for me the ritual is as important as the oil. I apply castor oil to my abdomen, pop on the wrap and let it do its thing while I sleep. Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid which has anti inflammatory and skin conditioning properties. Topically castor oil softens the skin so I always add a drop to my morning and evening body moisturiser as well.
This takes about 30 seconds and has become completely non negotiable.
I use a scraper first thing in the morning to remove the coating that builds up on the tongue overnight. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and is one of those habits that makes you wonder why you didn't start doing this earlier. It also has Ayurvedic roots, I use a copper scraper for its antimicrobial properties.
Five minutes of Gua Sha massage in the morning with a little facial oil, especially when my face is puffy or tense can be so relaxing and uplifting. This increases circulation, releases tension particularly in the jaw and relaxes the facial muscles. Can help with puffiness by encouraging fluid movement. In summer you can keep your Gua Sha in the fridge to add a cooling effect to your ritual.
One of my favourite skin treatments when I'm looking to give my skin a little extra encouragement. Tiny needles create controlled micro injuries to the skin which stimulates the skins natural repair processes helping to improve the appearance of texture, fine lines and scarring over time.
This is one I take seriously though, it's not something I would recommend doing aggressively or randomly at home. Skin needs time to recover, professional treatment and high hygiene standards.
I love incorporating LED light into my routine, it's simple and it's relaxing - requiring no effort from me. I particularly love red and near infrared light, these wavelengths have been studied for their effects on skin cells and support collagen production, skin repair and reduction in inflammation. It's a consistency game rather than an overnight miracle and for me it's the perfect excuse to sit still for 10-20 minutes and do absolutely nothing.
Another old school ritual, before a shower I dry brush over my body using gentle strokes starting at my feet and working upwards. This exfoliates the skin, removes dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling smooth and soft. The brushing also temporarily increases circulation giving you a fresh, rosy glow. I love how my skin feels afterwards and follow this ritual with a warm shower then moisturiser with a drop of castor oil.
