As we age looking after ourselves can start to feel less about chasing perfection and more about feeling comfortable in our own skin.
For many women life is busy. Work, family, changing hormones and everyday life can leave us with very little time for ourselves. Wellness doesn't mean a complete change in lifestyle however, sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.
Starting your morning with intention, instead of reaching for your phone give yourself a few quiet moments every morning. Have a glass of water and step outside for some fresh air and stretch out your body. Sit quietly in the sun with your coffee and create a calm morning ritual to help you start the day feeling more grounded.
Make your skincare routine a ritual and not a chore, your routine does not need to include ten steps. An easier routine is much easier to maintain. Start with a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that leaves your skin hydrated and comfortable and don't forget the sunscreen.
Do not underestimate the power of a good nights sleep. Good sleep is one the simplest wellness habits, yet one of the hardest to achieve. Create an evening ritual that signals to your body the day is coming to a close. Use lamps instead of ceiling lights, put your phone away, have a warm shower and complete your skincare routine. Journalling and sipping a cup of herbal tea can help with easing your way into going to bed rather than just collapsing into bed.
Move your body in ways that are enjoyable, you don't need to spend hours slogging it out in the gym. Pilates, walking, swimming or strength training can all contribute to part of a healthy lifestyle. The important thing is the enjoyment this will make it easier to maintain,
Giving yourself permission to slow down, this is often overlooked. As women we are very adept at putting everyone first and putting ourselves last. Take 30 minutes for yourself - this isn't being selfish. It might be a facial, a massage, a relaxing bath, reading a good book or simply just sitting quietly. Let this be a reminder that your well-being matters too.
Choose things that fit into real life. You won't maintain a routine that doesn't align with your day to day life. You don't need to completely reinvent your life, start with one small thing like drinking more water and build from there.
Small rituals create easier days and help you to feel confident in your own skin.
